A project on hip replacement technique has won the Queensland Orthopaedic Registrar’s Prize.  The project involved the three dimensional mapping of the pelvic socket rim.  It was presented there by Leigh Macdonald, who did the research in conjunction with David Mitchell & Norm Eizenberg of Monash University, whilst working in Ballarat. We are hoping this innovation can reduce the low dislocation rate to an even lower figure. David Mitchell is presenting the paper at the Combined British Hip Society and Societa Italiana dell’Anca in Milan in November 2015.

This diagram maps out how much movement is available in each direction, giving an indication of the boney stability. This suggests the best position to place the elevated lip of the polyethylene liner posteroinferiorly, replicating the boney ischium at that location.
